How to locate underground services
Ground penetrating radar
Ground penetrating radar (GPR) is a non-destructive geophysical technique that sends electromagnetic pulses into the subsurface to detect the location and depth of non-metallic services underground.
Electromagnetic induction
One of the most widely used underground service detection methods is electromagnetic induction (EMI). This method uses a transmitter to transfer an alternating current underground that interacts with an underground service and a receiver to analyse the transmitted signal. This signal gives us information about the location and depth of the service. EMI can only be used to detect services that are conductive, such as copper pipes or wiring.
Radio sonde location
Radio sonde locating is another technique to locate non-metallic services. This method uses a small, egg-shaped transmitter attached to a fibreglass rod that is moved through the service. As it moves along, we mark its location and depth precisely. It is especially useful for locating blocked utilities.
